A city soaked in history and beautiful architecture, Bruges has many hidden treasures waiting to be discovered. One of these gems is the statue of Madonna and Child, an iconic work of art that you absolutely must see during your visit to this mesmerizing city.
History of the statue
The statue of Madonna and Child, also known as the Bruges Madonna, was created by Michelangelo in 1504. It was purchased by wealthy merchant John and Alexander of Mouscron and brought to Bruges, where it has occupied a prominent place in Our Lady's Church ever since.
The statue of Madonna and Child from Bruges was taken from Belgium twice. The first time was in 1794 by the French occupiers, who took it to Paris. After the defeat of Napoleon, it returned on Jan. 3, 1816. The second time was during the withdrawal of German troops in 1944. It was taken by Germans on the night of Sept. 6-7, disguised in a mattress, along with 10 paintings from the church in a truck bearing the Red Cross emblem. In 1945, everything was recovered in a salt mine in Altaussee, Austria.
A unique work by Michelangelo
The Madonna and Child is special because it is one of the few works by Michelangelo that left Italy during his lifetime. The sculpture depicts the Madonna with a serene, yet powerful look as she holds the Christ Child on her lap. This work of art illustrates Michelangelo's mastery of marble and his ability to convey deep emotion and spirituality.
